Restoring biological connectivity across the Selva Lacandona corridor in southern Mexico.
GANRESA restores biological connectivity in one of Mexico's highest-biodiversity regions - the Selva Lacandona / Palenque corridor in Chiapas and Tabasco. The project works with cattle ranchers to convert approximately 20% of each landholding back to forest, while transitioning the rest to regenerative grazing.
A leading energy supplier has signalled interest in offtake, and the project has secured strong support from the Chiapas state government and SEMARNAT at federal level.
This is the highest-biodiversity corridor in Mexico, but more than a century of cattle expansion has fragmented forest cover into isolated patches. GANRESA reconnects them — and pays ranchers to be part of the solution.
$85 per hectare for regenerative grazing systems plus technical advice. $100 per hectare base payment on forest area from year four. Carbon revenue sharing from year 18 — 60% of value over the project lifetime stays with local stakeholders.
Local cattle associations are actively advertising the project to potential participants. The Chiapas state government has enabled project participants to receive cattle insurance once enrolled — a key non-carbon benefit. SEMARNAT received the project favourably at national level. A major energy supplier is in discussions on offtake.
40-year project life. 3.75 million tonnes of CO₂ targeted over the lifetime under Verra VM0047. Over 10 million trees planted, 100% native species, on a pioneer-then-successor planting strategy.
